In order to access the SURF property, everyone will need to complete a SURF Access Request Form (SARF) no less than 48 business hours prior to arrival. The link to do so can be found below. Additionally, all US Citizens are required to bring their physical photo Real ID, and foreign nationals are required to bring their physical Passport and Visa if applicable.
Anyone entering the underground must be 18 years or older, must complete safety training, and must sign two waivers: 1) Acknowledgement of Risk and 2) Release, Agreement not to Sue and Waiver.
Temperatures will be in the low- to mid-70°s Fahrenheit (low 20°s Celsius) on the 4,850-foot level.
For safety purposes, visitors are required to wear clothing that is appropriate at a construction site: full-length pants or jeans, shirt with at least quarter-length sleeves, sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and socks. (Sandals, high heels, or open-toed shoes are not permitted.) SURF provides all required personal protective equipment (PPE)—vests/coveralls, hardhats, cap lamps, safety glasses, etc. Restrooms are available underground. Cameras are welcome.
Visitors going underground must be able to perform the following activities:
§ Don and wear the required PPE (potentially including a fall protection harness).
§ Don and use a self-rescuer.
§ Walk across uneven or slippery surfaces for distances more than one mile (~1.6 km).
§ Walk in both warm/hot and humid conditions.
§ Tolerate changes in elevation.
§ Tolerate standing in very close proximity to others while riding in the personnel cage.
§ Recognize and respond to emergency signals and signs (visual, auditory, and olfactory).
§ Travel to egress points unassisted, and under their own power.
§ Ascend and descend up to three flights of stairs at a time.
