Underground tours of the 4850-foot level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility are planned for:
Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 1:30 PM departing from "The Rushmore"
and
Friday, May 13, 2022 at 12:30 PM departing from SD Mines Campus
This tour has reached its maximum number of participants. You may check at the registration desk if there have been any cancellations. Tuesday spots are still available.
Return time for both options is approximately 6:30 PM (all times are still tentative and for travel planning only).
Please, note that the number of places for visits are limited. So please, make sure to sign up for the tour through our registration website.
Underground Notes: You must be physically able to walk up and down four flights of stairs and walk at least 1 mile on uneven ground. Temperatures will be in the low- to mid-70s on the 4,850-foot level. The Sanford Lab will provide personal protective equipment (coveralls, hardhats, cap lamps, safety glasses, etc.). For safety purposes, we require tour guests to wear clothing that is appropriate at a construction site: full-length pants or jeans and tennis shoes or hiking boots and socks. No open-toed shoes or sandals allowed. If you are visiting an area where safety-toed boots are required, you may bring your own or wear boots provided by the lab. Restrooms are available underground. Cameras are welcome. Please leave personal belongings such as coats, laptops, briefcases, purses, etc. in your vehicle or the conference room. You may collect them when you return to the surface.
