Quantum Partnership Workshop at SURF

The Quantum Partnership Workshop is a collaborative gathering at the Sanford Lab Research Facility, in Lead, SD. The workshop is hosted by the Great Plains Network (GPN) and The Institute for Underground Science at SURF, in partnership with the South Dakota Quantum Center initiative. This event is designed to foster synergies and forge new connections within the quantum research community.

The workshop will feature insightful presentations and discussions, including:

 

• Introductions: Gain comprehensive insights into the missions and visions of key institutions driving quantum research.
• IBM Partnership: Discuss partnership and opportunities.
• Quantum to Business: Learn about the several companies that are interested in working with this group.
• Quantum Curriculum: Explore the evolving landscape of quantum education and training, examining strategies for curriculum development and implementation. (undergrad and K-12)
• New Projects: Discuss new projects and possible funding opportunites for your respected institutions.
• Underground Tour of SURF: Participants will have the opportunity to join a tour of the research facility.
• Featured Speaker: Learn from and collaborate with someone from an established leading quantum center.

 

The workshop will kick off on Monday, July 21 at 1:00 p.m. MT with an an afternon of introductions and discussions at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in the E&O Building Conference Room. Enjoy refreshments and connect with fellow attendees while immersing yourself in the story of the region, including the creation of the deepest gold mine in the Northern Hemisphere, to Nobel-Prize-winning science, to secrets of the universe still being uncovered at SURF.

1:45 PM → 3:00 PM Quantum Networking for GPN Region (featured speaker: Eden Figueroa)¶

At Stony Brook University, a team led by Eden Figueroa, has established one of the most advanced quantum networks in the United States. Spanning multiple locations across Long Island, the network connects key institutions such as Brookhaven National Lab, Yale University, and Stony Brook itself.

Building on their success, Stony Brook has proposed expanding widening its quantum networking efforts including plans to develop and implement multiple networks within the GPN footprint. To kick off our workshop, Dr. Figueroa will present the story of the Long Island network, highlighting the groundbreaking discoveries and innovative technologies developed throughout its evolution.

This presentation sets the foundation for Tuesday afternoon's workshop activities.

3:00 PM → 4:00 PM Partnering with IBM through the University of Missouri Quantum Innovation Center¶

nformatics Specialist Chi-Ren Shyu will lead the University of Missouri’s Quantum Innovation Center (QIC) team in collaboration with the IBM Quantum Innovation Center to explore how to access and utilize IBM’s advanced quantum computing technologies. Through Missouri’s recent partnership with IBM, GPN partners now have the opportunity to directly engage with IBM’s cutting-edge quantum hardware and receive expert support. Bring your research ideas to this session and discover how quantum computing resources can help propel your work forward.
