Description

The Quantum Partnership Workshop is a collaborative gathering at the Sanford Lab Research Facility, in Lead, SD. The workshop is hosted by the Great Plains Network (GPN) and The Institute for Underground Science at SURF, in partnership with the South Dakota Quantum Center initiative. This event is designed to foster synergies and forge new connections within the quantum research community.

In addition to highlighting quantum research activities throughout the South Dakota and GPN region, this year’s program will have a unique focus on quantum networking with an intended outcome of expanding the quantum footprint throughout the Midwest.

Date: Monday, July 21 - Wednesday, July 23, 2025
Location: Sanford Underground Research Facility, Lead, South Dakota (Education & Outreach Building)

The workshop will feature insightful presentations and discussions, including:

  • Introductions: Gain comprehensive insights into the missions and visions of key regional institutions driving quantum research.
  • Quantum Networking: Join with the NSF-funded SCY-QNet team to whiteboard quantum networks in your state or local area.
  • Quantum Computing: Join with the director of the University of Missouri/IBM Quantum Innovation Center to explore the resources available through the GPN partnership.
  • Quantum Curriculum: Explore the evolving landscape of quantum education and training, examining strategies for curriculum development and implementation, including graduate programs to secondary education.
  • New Projects: Discuss new projects and possible funding opportunities for your respected institutions.
  • Underground Tour of SURF: Participants will have the opportunity to join an underground tour of the research facility.

The workshop kicks off Monday, July 21 at 1:00 p.m. MT with an afternoon of introductions and discussions at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Later, enjoy refreshments and connect with fellow attendees during a social at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center, where you’ll explore the region’s rich history—from the world's deepest gold mine to Nobel Prize-winning science and ongoing neutrino research at SURF.

Don't miss this opportunity to be part of transformative dialogue shaping the future of quantum exploration. Join us at the Quantum Partnership Workshop and be at the forefront of quantum innovation and collaboration.

      Keynote:
      Eden Figueroa
      Presidential Innovation Endowed Professor
Director of the Center for Distributed Quantum Processing
      Stony Brook University

At Stony Brook University, a team led by Dr. Eden Figueroa has established one of the most advanced quantum networks in the United States. Spanning multiple locations across Long Island, SCY-QNet connects the quantum efforts at Stony Brook, Columbia University, and Yale University, as well as the Brookhaven National Lab.

Building on their success, Stony Brook has proposed expanding widening its quantum networking efforts including plans to develop and implement multiple networks within the GPN footprint. To kick off our workshop, Dr. Figueroa will present the story of the Long Island network, highlighting the groundbreaking discoveries and innovative technologies developed throughout its evolution.

This presentation sets the foundation for Tuesday afternoon's workshop activities.

Workshop participants will whiteboard multiple quantum networks within the GPN footprint with the results to be used for funding support. Led by individual members of the SCY-Quantum Network Team participants will identify the potential purpose, scope, and location of their conceptual network. Ideally, each group working on a local network proposed network will include a potential project manager, a network architect, and a scientist who would use the network. in partnership with the GPN and Stony Brook team with a network architect and science participant.

Using a model piloted by the SCY-QNet team on Long Island, the workshop should result in a proposal to develop up to six similar networks across GPN over the next five years. The networks would advance progressively in size and complexity, aligned for potential interconnection as the field advances and allows. Using quantum networking technologies developed by SCY-QNet and others, the projects would be deployed in great part over the existing GPN infrastructure.

For more on the current SCY-QNet project see below documents.
